Tired of your dog pulling you on a walk? Want to know how to choose a great dog food? Would you like to learn how to bathe your dog or trim their nails so you don’t have to pay someone else to do it? Having trouble housetraining your dog? Hate that your dog won’t come to you when called? Do you have a new puppy that you would like to train? Have a dog with bad manners such as jumping up on people?

Come to class for help and to learn the answers to these questions as well as many others. The goal is to have fun communicating with your dog. Training opens up communication between your dog and you. Effective communication is necessary to instruct what your dog about what you want them to do.

Obedience training is one of the best things you can do for your dog or puppy as well as yourself. Classes will be taught using positive reinforcement methods. Obedience training is the foundation for solving just about any problem. Learn indispensable information on how dogs think and why they do the things that they do. This will allow you to better understand your dog. You will learn how to use the knowledge gained in class to continue your dog’s education throughout their life and to train your next dog.

Upon completion of the series of classes, you will be able to: know how to prepare your dog before a training session, describe basic routines you can teach a dog, describe how to properly set the environment for the dog in order to maximize training, describe the best ways for teaching your dog to sit, lie down, and come, and be able to summarize general first aid precautions and items you should have on hand for emergencies.

Basic commands such as sit, stay, come, walking on a leash, down, leave it, recall with distraction and release will be covered. Advance commands will be discussed as time permits. You will be taught how to accustom your dog to being handled. Topics such as housetraining, crate training, grooming, appropriate toys, collar & leash selection, choosing dog food & treats for the life stage of your dog, basic first aid, behavior in the car, excessive barking, begging, bolting out doors, and jumping on furniture,

JOIN US FOR CLASS AND BE PROUD OF YOUR DOG’S BEHAVIOR

Hello Heart Family,

Every now and then someone reports back on their adoption. Today I received this update and sweet thank you from Carrie who adopted a Yorkie puppy Dixie. Here’s what Carrie has to say…

Hello! I’m not sure if i am sending this message to the right person, but i was hoping if not maybe this message could be passed along to Gloria and Bill of Heart Humane Society.

I adopted a beautiful little yorkie puppy, “Dixie” from them and wanted to send an update as i promised, and say thanks again! We absolutely love her and she has adjusted to her new forever home wonderfully! We have renamed her Pixie, and she has been home with us for 25 days now. She immediately fell in love with our 9 year old yorkie, Zowi, and they are best of buds! Training her has been so easy because she does everything that Zowi does. I have attached a picture of them together and a picture of Pixie’s first bath at home that i thought you would enjoy! Just wanted to say thanks again and let you know how grateful we are to have her and how grateful we are that you rescued this little one. She is so precious and has already brought us so much joy! ~ Carrie & Justin

And you have just brought us joy too. Thank you Carrie and family. Here’s your stars.

We had a good turn out for the Heart’s Annual Walk With the Animals. As usual, some folks dressed up in costumes while others took advantage of the great weather enjoying a good hearty walk with their pets.

We dedicated this year’s walk to Hershey Dog, the beloved companion of Dr. Hans and Pam Noffsinger who live in Louisville, but have always been loyal supporters of HEART.

Ray Saylor and his drug sniffing dog Ziko provided entertainment and education about the war on drugs in our region. Ray had no problem sharing some of his secrets for tracking and catching people who are ready and willing to sell drugs. Then Ziko was turned loose to find the drugs stashed in one of 10 vehicles as well as some containers in the area. Of course, it only took him a few seconds to point out the stashes. Great job Ziko!

Pastor Ann Leston of the Corydon Presbyterian Church offered three touching prayers for the animals everywhere, They are here to serve us, yet so many suffer in dire conditions. Next, Ann offered individual Blessing of the Animals for all pets at the event as well as for those who could not attend due to health or other circumstance.

We wrapped up the event awarding Gift Baskets hand made by HEART President Gloria Scott. Here are the winners:
